Datasets

SeaBASS contains several special datasets that are not indexed in the file search engine. These datasets either contain files with atypical formats, unusual measurement types, or other special considerations that do not quite conform to the standardized SeaBASS format. This page provides a centralized listing of such datasets, as those files can still be accessed and manually downloaded from the archive. Please refer to individual pages for more information.

Bioacoustics

SeaBASS contains a large dataset of bioacoustic data measured via Acoustic Water Column Profiler (AWCP) submitted by the Miksis-Olds lab at Penn State.

Due to the large file size, these files have been stored in the archive as zipped files. Once unpacked, the text files are organized in a SeaBASS format with a few small differences to accommodate the "EchoView" software which is the native software typically used to read bioacoustic data. The files contain a standard SeaBASS metadata header followed by the data-block. The data-block portion of the file has been left in the native EchoView format (which is very similar to the standard SeaBASS format, with the exception of the "date" field being formatted as "yyyymmdd" instead of "mm/dd/yyyy"). Anyone wishing to open these data in EchoView simply needs to decompress the zipped data then remove the SeaBASS header at the beginning of each file.
